Our extra-curricular highlights
Debating and public speaking
Students can develop their thinking, communication and teamwork skills through debating and public speaking. They also have the chance to compete in local and state events.
School Instrumental Music Program
Our school instrumental music program is administered by Mrs Tara Winsor, who provides group tutorials for violin, brass, woodwind and percussion. Spaces are limited and auditions are held at the beginning of each school year.
Our school band and violin group play at local community and school events throughout the year.
The program is currently run on Fridays, with lesson times rotated each week. Students are encouraged to use their own instrument, but some instruments are available to hire or hire purchase through the school.
Trips and excursions
Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world.
Sport and Physical Activity
Students participate in a range of PSSA sports, including Soccer, Netball, Cricket, Basketball, Rugby League and Rugby Union, as well as participation in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics representative carnivals.
Athletics Carnival
Students in Year 3 to Year 6 participate in Athletics Field events during school sport times. The school then hosts an Athletics Carnival in Term 2, with track events the main focus. Year 2 students are also invited to participate in our Athletics Carnival track events.
Children's University
It’s an innovative program that engages children and young people in exciting, out-of-school learning opportunities to increase their chances for educational achievement and rewards them for taking responsibility for their own learning.
Students at SHPS receives a Passport to Learning where hours of extra-curricular activities are logged. Hours are accumulated and once the hours needed to graduate are achieved, students are presented with Children’s University certificates at a formal graduation ceremony held at the University of Newcastle.
Cultural Activities
Students learn Wonnarua language through a local elder.
Students participate in cultural lessons with a Wonnarua teacher.
All students celebrate culture through special events such as Harmony Day and NAIDOC Week.
